The CJC V30 vacuum filter extends the remaining life time of your transformer here's why:
- The V30 removes oxygen dissolved in the oil. This means that oxidation (which requires oxygen) inside the transformer slows down considerably.
- The V30 removes water from the oil and thus dries the cellulosic insulation. Moisture is known to accelerate the ageing rate (hydrolysis) of the cellulose. Removing moisture extends the remaining life time of the cellulose
The graphs on the right show how the V30 reduces both the water content and the oxygen content of a transformer system. Due to the equilibrium between moisture in oil and moisture in the cellulosic insulation inside the transformer most (at normal operating temperatures >99%) of the total moisture inside a transformer is located in the cellulose. Since only the oil is accesible from the outside the oil is used as the media of transportation for the moisture. This results in the fact that drying a transformer takes a long time since one can only remove water from the oil. The V30 can remove water in the oil down to 4 ppm thus slowly drying out the transformer. The graph shows how a transformer starting with a moisture of 23ppm in the oil (corresponding to 3.75% in the cellulose or a total of 191 kg) was dried to 10 ppm in the oil (corresponding to 2.25% in the cellulose or 114 kg) during the course of 1 year. The transformer runs at an almost steady temperature of 45 degrees Celsius. A rule of thumb says that reducing the moisture content in the cellulose by 1% doubles the insulation life time. This has been more than achieved using the V30.
The second graph shows how the oxygen concentration of the transformer was reduced by vacuum filtration of the oil. At equilibrium with the atmosphere the oil contains approximately 25000 ppm O2 (oxygen). As stated above removing this oxygen starves the oxidation processes inside the transformer. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a gas which is produced when the cellulose oxidises. The graph shows how the rate O2/CO2 increases as the oxygen concentration is lowered. Less oxygen simply means less carbon dioxide which again indicates that the ageing process of the cellulose is slowing down considerably.
